The Virtual Beit Midrash

The Kolot virtual Bet Midrash is a new program at Kolot, designed for Fellows who are interested in studying Jewish sources and their relation to contemporary issues, via the Internet. The program is taught by Kolot’s most outstanding lecturers using an advanced digitized environment, designed especially for Kolot’s needs.

Kolot successfully completed a pilot of this project in February 2004; some 150 Fellows who took part in the program studied texts, watched video clips prepared by the facilitators, and joined in an interactive dialogue carried out through the forum.  The feedback received after its conclusion indicated that the participants found the program to be very valuable, enjoyed its content, and were particularly satisfied with their ability to access the site at various hours of the day and to use the asynchronous learning system to delve deeply into the subject matter.

The success of the pilot project led to the decision to continue developing this as one of Kolot’s programs.  A team is already building additional learning units to be taught on-line.

The program is meant for people with basic web surfing capabilities and an interest in spending 2-3 hours a week during the 5 weeks of the course.
